The International Association of Mercury Free Dentists (IAMFD): Why Choose a Member
The mercury free dentist database listing includes dentists who are members of the International Association of Mercury Free Dentists (IAMFD). The reason I founded this Association is explained in the following mission statement.
The International Association of Mercury Free Dentists (IAMFD)
The IAMFD is an association of mercury free dentists who are committed to the philosophy, concepts, and practice of mercury free dentistry. The IAMFD’s mission statement is to "improve the oral and overall health of the dental patient and provide them free access to mercury free dentists committed to its philosophy". It also exists to instill patients with the confidence and trust that come from knowing what they can expect from every IAMFD member dentist. |
There are a number of distinct advantages of choosing an IAMFD member dentist, the most important being is that member dentists commit to the following Standards of Practice:
• The member dentist will not place mercury amalgam fillings;
• The member dentist will use a safe amalgam removal procedure;
• Every treatment or service offered by a member dentist will be available to the patient;
• The member dentist will be trained in every treatment and therapy he or she offers;
• The member dentist will, if requested, provide patients with a source of information about the health hazards of mercury amalgam fillings, mercury detoxification, and oral hygiene education;
• The member dentist will, if requested, provide patients with a source of information about the relationship between oral and overall health; and
• The dentist pledges to practice with integrity and honesty.
How to Know if a Dentist is a Member of the IAMFD*
Dentists listed on the Mercury Free Dentist database who are members of the International Association of Mercury Free Dentists will have the IAMFD logo displayed next to his or her listing on the Mercury Free Dentist Database. This is your assurance that the member dentist is following the Standards of Practice established by the IAMFD.
In addition, member dentists are distinguished from non-members because they also provide Key Information regarding their mercury free dental practice. This allows each dentist to let you know who they are, what they do, what they offer, and any additional services they provide . . . in their own words. An IAMFD member dentist will also provide website and email links, if applicable.
*A Note from Dr. Tom: Whenever a choice is available, I encourage you to select a member of the IAMFD. However, nothing can be inferred from the fact that a mercury free dentist may choose not to become a member of the IAMFD. A non-member mercury free dentist may offer as many services as an IAMFD member dentist and be equally qualified, but for whatever reason has chosen not to join the IAMFD. If an IAMFD member dentist is not available in your area we recommend that you question any non-member dentist listed about his or her approach to mercury free dentistry. I also suggest that your questions include those listed in the IAMFD Standards of Practice described above.

Mercury Free Dentistry: Associations and Organizations
There are a number of dental organizations whose goals are to promote mercury free dentistry and improve the quality and service of dental treatment. I am including the ones I'm familiar with here so you will understand why I'm comfortable recommending any mercury free dentist who belongs to these Associations/Organizations and are also members of the IAMFD.
International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT)
The IAOMT is a membership organization for dental, medical and research professionals who seek to promote mercury-free dentistry and raise the standards of scientific biocompatibility in the dental practice. The IAOMT is a fantastic organization whose members have set very high standards of practice and I highly recommend an IAOMT member dentist who is also a member of the IAMFD. This combination will ensure that you will be treated by a dentist who is committed to the philosophy and practice of mercury free dentistry. Look for the IAOMT logo when reading the Key Information section of an IAMFD dentists listing on the database.
Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies (LVI)
This is another organization I feel very good about. The LVI Institute is one of the world's premier post-graduate dental teaching centers and was established to educate, guide and support dentists in the delivery of the most advanced patient-based care possible and many of the dentists who graduate from the Institute have mercury free practices. Because the LVI stresses advanced education in cosmetic dentistry LVI dentists, who are also mercury free, are experts at replacing mercury amalgam fillings with the latest in composite, and other appropriate dental fillings, inlays, and crowns. Replacing amalgam fillings with composites is very technique sensitive and LVI graduates are highly skilled at this procedure. Because of this I highly recommend a IAMFD member dentist who is also an LVI graduate. An LVI member dentist will include this information with in the Key Information section of his or her database listing; so be sure to look for it.
Mercury Free Dentists: Free Listing
At this time, any dentist who has a mercury free practice can be listed in the database without joining the IAMFD. The minimum requirement for a free listing is that he or she does not place mercury amalgam fillings and provides the patient with a safe environment for amalgam removal. A free listing will only include the following contact information; name, address, city, state and phone number and does not have space for Key Information text, email or web site address that is available to IAMFD member dentists.
